Daily activity is the next foundational health habit that we need to cover.
Now, what I'm going to say about it might surprise you. And that is because I don't classify exercise as a foundational habit. I think it is more advanced than the foundational level.
The reason for that goes back to my stress discussion yesterday. For the majority of 40+ parents and professionals, I don't believe their body is in a state to handle exercise appropriately. I think they have too much mental stress (responsibilities, obligations, duties, etc) as well as a good amount of physical stress (pre-existing injuries, limited range of motion, tightness, etc) - so when it comes to adding exercise on top, these individuals actually aren't doing very much good to their body.
What is actually way more beneficial for this population of individuals is non-exercise activity, such as walking or stretching. Basically, any sort of activity that doesn't add additional stress on the body. You still get the benefits of exercise without the negative wear and tear. What's more important is that this sort of activity can actually help reduce stress, so not only are you getting activity WITHOUT adding stress, you are actually reducing it. It's a win-win and it's the optimal activity for weight loss.
Now, if weight loss isn't your primary goal, that doesn't mean you should neglect daily activity. It is still incredibly important, even if you are working out consistently. I always tell people that walking is super important, but it doesn't replace exercise. The opposite is also true - if your body is at a point where it is ready and primed for exercise, that is great, but it shouldn't replace your walking (or whatever non-exercise activity you are choosing). You should still aim to move your body for at least 30 minutes per day in a manner that does not add physical stress to your system.
Here are some reasons why I love walking and recommend everyone should do it as frequently as possible:
- Our bodies were made to be in motion, and walking is the most simple form of motion for us
- When we are walking, we are not sitting
- We burn calories and boost our metabolism while we walk
- Walking promotes blood flow to all areas of the body which promotes healing and rejuvenation, especially if you have an injury
- Walking is a great opportunity to clear your head
- Walking outside is a great way to get sunshine on your face, which is the best way to get Vitamin D (which is arguably the most important vitamin)
So if you aren't happy with where you are at, or are looking to take your health to the next level, your daily (non-exercise) activity should be a consideration. It is not as important as your nutrition, and won't be super effective if you are stressed/not sleeping, but it is important. And can help move the needle as part of your foundational health habits.
