We are incredibly excited to announce to you all our new name, Harbor Park Health and Fitness! After being Harbor Park Health and Fitness for 5 years, this change doesn’t come easy - while we are super excited about our future, we realize that any change comes with questions, concerns, and more. Today I hope to explain why we are changing, to shed a bit of light on our world, and to hopefully answer any questions you may have!

To start, it’s important to know that the change in name was partly inspired and partly necessitated by recent events in our world. Today I am going to share with you the reasons behind the change and shed a little light on what’s to come.

First off, we were inspired to do more - we’ve expanded our vision for the company and want to expand our scope of services with it. While we still love CrossFit and still believe it to be the best way to achieve general fitness, we don't want to be limited to making super fit humans anymore. We will still definitely do that, but it’s not what gets us out of bed in the morning. We get out of bed because we have the opportunity to change lives for the better. We get to cure individuals of obesity and other chronic diseases. We get to teach beginners how to use their bodies in amazing ways. To us, those are the truly inspiring and meaningful moments that make us love what we do. And we don’t want to limit ourselves to just CrossFit in order to help the people who need to be helped. There are many ways to get people excited about exercise and being healthy, and we are excited to offer more!

Secondly, we were also necessitated to change. That is just because of the stigma that has developed around CrossFit in the recent years. If people haven’t tried it for themselves, they typically think CrossFit is too hard, or too dangerous, or only for the super fit. Unfortunately none of these things are true! While it is hard, or can be dangerous if done without care, and does make people super fit, it doesn’t exclude everyone else. As a matter of fact, we get a bunch of individuals who come to us and tell us they’ve never done anything athletic in their lives! And that’s totally fine! We want to encourage people to come try fitness out and it kills us when people are too afraid or think that what we do is too hard.

Another driving factor in our decision to change came to us as we’ve gained more experience and learned from our members - and that is things start with your health. You can be extremely fit, but unhealthy. You can be extremely strong, but unhealthy. Working out really hard does not necessarily mean you are healthy, no matter how good at it you become. And health is multifaceted, it’s not just your physical health. It’s your emotion and mental health as well. We don’t just want to improve your fitness, we want to help improve your health from top to bottom. So we want to incorporate practices like Pilates and yoga that offer benefits that our CrossFit classes do not!

To all of our CrossFit people, don’t worry! CrossFit isn’t going anywhere! We still love CrossFit and swear by it! It’s still definitely the best thing you can do to improve your overall fitness! But like I’ve already explained, overall fitness is not the only thing that matters. We want to make sure we are offering enough to cover all of the important things, and we want to make sure we are including everyone, even those who don't like CrossFit!

Stay tuned next week, I will be breaking down our Health and Fitness segments in more detail and give a better understanding of what to expect. For now, take a look at this graphic for a quick overview!
