What is Massage Therapy?
Massage is the use of a combination of different modalities to facilitate change and wellness throughout the body. Through the use of the hands, forearms, elbows, and sometimes therapy tools, a massage therapist will manipulate the soft tissue of the body to relieve tension, pain, and aid in healing and increased range of motion. This can be done superficially or through the deep muscle layers.

What are the benefits of massage?
As mentioned previously, massage helps aid in the promotion of wellness, pain relief and management, and overall relaxation of the body and mind. Massage helps to release endorphins which aid in pain management and it is believed massage is one of the oldest medical forms known to man. Massage can aid in post injury recovery, migraine management, stress management, and can help prevent future injuries. According to Renaissance College, massage can reduce the stress hormone cortisol by 40% in just one session. Massage therapy can also help reduce blood pressure and aid in boosting the immune systems response. A 60-minute massage offers the same benefits as 7-8 hours of sleep. The benefits of massage therapy are endless.

Who can benefit from massage?
Anyone and everyone can benefit from massage. Of course, there are certain instances where massage is contraindicated, however, from infants all the way to the elderly massage has its benefits. With all the
different types of modalities such as Swedish relaxation, deep tissue, myofascial release, craniosacral therapy, reiki, trigger point therapy, sports massage, the list goes on, everyone could benefit from it.

How often should you receive a massage?
As an experienced massage therapist with 8 years under my belt, I feel massage should be practiced at least once a month. If there is an injury or specific issue that is being addressed, once or even twice a week can be beneficial. Massage is an incredibly useful tool to aid our bodies much like fitness and nutrition. It should be a common practice among the other health practices in one’s life.
